What is a Hair Graft? Learn the basics of hair transplantation

Hair transplantation is a surgical process in which hair follicles are transferred from one part of the body called the 'donor site' to a bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'. Primarily hair transplant surgery is used to treat male pattern baldness. This is a minimally invasive surgery where grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding, (like the back of the head) are transplanted to the bald scalp. Hair transplantation can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair etc. A hair-bearing tissue that is extracted from one place and transplanted to other balding area is called hair graft. A graft can be a modern follicular unit, mini micro or a large 4 mm hair plug. Hair graft is a generic name given to all of them. Hair graft is usually selected from the back of the scalp which is genetically resistant to hair fall and hair sustainability is high. The surgical approach, tools and the kind of technology used determines the size and shape of the hair graft chosen. India is the preferred destination for Hair Transplant Surgery for patients from UAE.

Creation of Hair Graft

During Hair Transplant Surgery, hair graft is picked up from the donor area that is back of the scalp. The purpose of hair graft is to remove and pick a small amount of tissue that can grow hair and transplant it to the balding area. Hair is picked up either by FUE or FUT process. In today’s era, FUE method is mostly used as it does not leave any scar, there is no suture and recovery time is quick. Follicular Unit in FUE method is extracted individually from the recipient scalp. FUE is a comparatively safer nut time-consuming process.

Graft Survivability
It is crucial that the grafts that have been implanted should survive to get the desired result. There are a number of factors that affect the graft survivability

Dehydration – Graft does not survive over 16 minutes in a dry environment. Storing them in a liquid solution such as saline addresses this problem.

  1. ·Temperature – This is one of the primary factors leading to dehydration. If the grafts have to be stored the need lower temperature. Below negative twenty degrees centigrade, the graft shows minimal damage.
  2. ·Oxygen supply – The oxygen supply should not be hampered for long for the grafts to survive. During the  extraction and implantation, the time consumed should be minimum for the survivability of the graft.
  3. ·Proper selection – the back side of the scalp provides the strongest donor hairs. If the surgeon selects hairs from other areas of the scalp or body, however, they may not be as durable. In worst case scenarios, the donor hairs themselves are susceptible to degradation over time.
